Books you own: where to buy DRM-free audiobooks and ebooks

Voxlight plays audiobooks you own. That means real files: an M4B, a folder of MP3s, an EPUB. Files that aren't locked to one company's app. This catalogue lists where to get those files, legally, and what to check before you pay.

Checked October 12, 2026 · 27 entries

Voxlight is not affiliated with any store listed here, and none of these links earn us anything. Voxlight does not remove DRM, and this page does not explain how.

§C1 What “DRM-free” means VX-C1

What “DRM-free” means

DRM stands for digital rights management. It is a lock a store puts on a file so that it plays only in the store's own app.

A book with DRM is a book you can use, not a book you hold. If the store closes, changes its app, or loses the rights, your copy can stop working.

A DRM-free book is a plain file. You can:

  • keep it in your own folders and back it up
  • play it in any app that reads the format
  • move it to a new phone, a new app or a new computer
  • still have it if the store is gone

DRM-free doesn't mean free of charge, and it doesn't mean you can share it. Most DRM-free stores sell a personal licence, the same as a printed book. Some add your name or an invisible watermark to the file. That is fine: a watermark doesn't stop the file from opening.

Why it matters for Voxlight: it can only open files it can read. Audible and Apple Books purchases are DRM-protected, so they don't play in Voxlight. A DRM-free audiobook plus its DRM-free ebook is what lets Voxlight highlight the text word by word as the narrator reads.

§C2 How to check a book before you buy VX-C2

How to check a book before you buy

  1. Store-wide DRM-free. Some stores sell only DRM-free files: Libro.fm, Smashwords, Baen, StoryBundle and Leanpub, among others. You don't need to check each title there.
  2. Per-title stores. Others mix DRM-free and locked titles. Look on the product page for words like “DRM-free”, “Download EPUB”, “Export option” or “sold without DRM”. Each store's signal is in the directory below.
  3. Look at the download button, not the app. If the only way to listen is “open in our app”, it is not a file you own.
  4. Watch for .acsm. If an ebook download gives you a small .acsm file, the book has Adobe DRM. Voxlight can't open it.
  5. When in doubt, ask the store: “Can I download this as an MP3 or M4B file to use in another app?” A DRM-free store will say yes.
  6. Buy direct when you can. Some publishers sell the same ebook DRM-free on their own site and with DRM at the big retailers.
§C3 Formats in plain words VX-C3

Formats in plain words

Audiobooks
M4BOne file for the whole book, with chapters built in. The easiest format: one file to move, and the chapters come with it.
MP3Usually a folder (often zipped) of many files, one per track or chapter. Works everywhere. Keep the files together and in order.
M4A · AACThe same kind of audio as M4B, often without chapters.
FLAC · WAV · AIFFLossless or uncompressed audio. The files are very large.
Ebooks
EPUBThe open ebook standard, and the one Voxlight reads.
PDFA fixed page layout. Voxlight doesn't use PDFs.
MOBI · AZW3Kindle formats. Voxlight doesn't read them, so choose EPUB.

Voxlight imports M4B, M4A, MP3, AAC, FLAC, WAV and AIFF. Select all the MP3 files of one book together, or just pick the .zip the store gave you, and Voxlight opens the zip for you. If a store offers Ogg Vorbis, choose MP3 or AAC instead.

Libraries: free to borrow, not yours to keep

Libraries are a great way to listen for free. But a library loan is not an owned file, and it won't play in Voxlight.

Libby / OverDriveFree library loans. Audiobooks play in the Libby app or browser. A few library cards allow MP3 downloads, but Libby says you are expected to delete them from all devices when the loan ends.
HooplaFree library loans (ebooks and audiobooks for 21 days). Downloads only inside the hoopla mobile apps, and titles return automatically when the loan ends.
Internet Archive / Open Library lending1-hour or 14-day loans of in-copyright books. Downloadable loans are encrypted (LCP / Adobe) and need a reader app such as Thorium.

Not DRM-free, or not listed

These were checked and are not in the directory, with the reason.

AudibleDRM-protected (AAX/AAXC). Plays only in Audible's apps, so the files don't work in Voxlight.
Apple Books (audiobooks and most ebooks)Purchases are protected by Apple's FairPlay DRM and play in Apple's Books app, not as files you can move to another app.

§C5 Getting your files into Voxlight VX-C5

Getting your files into Voxlight

  • Files app. Download straight to Files on your iPhone (Safari saves to Downloads), or save to iCloud Drive on your Mac and it appears on your phone.
  • AirDrop. Send the M4B, the zip or the EPUB from your Mac to your iPhone and open it in Voxlight.
  • Your own server. If you keep your audiobooks in Plex or Audiobookshelf, connect your server in Voxlight and import from there.

Keep a copy of every file somewhere you control, such as iCloud Drive or a backup drive. Owning the file only helps if you still have it.

§C6 Pairing an audiobook with the right edition VX-C6

Pairing an audiobook with the right edition

Sync works best when the ebook says what the narrator says.

  • US and UK editions are fine. Voxlight handles spelling differences such as colour and color.
  • Different translations won't sync. A recording of the Constance Garnett translation of Notes from Underground needs the Garnett text, not a newer translation. Check the translator on both.
  • Abridged audio won't line up with an unabridged ebook. Look for “unabridged” on the audiobook.
  • Revised or expanded editions can drift. Match the edition year or publisher where you can.
  • Public-domain pairs: LibriVox pages name the source text the reader used. Pick the same translation from Standard Ebooks or Project Gutenberg.
§C7 Questions VX-C7

Questions

Is DRM-free the same as pirated?
No. DRM-free books are sold legally by the publisher or a licensed store. The only difference is that the file isn't locked to one app.
Can I use my Audible books in Voxlight?
No. Audible audiobooks are DRM-protected and play only in Audible's apps. The same goes for Apple Books. Voxlight plays files you own that aren't DRM-protected.
Which is better for Voxlight, M4B or MP3?
M4B. It's one file with chapters built in. MP3 works too: select all of a book's MP3s at once, or import the store's zip.
Do I need a computer?
Not always. You can download to the Files app in Safari on iPhone. Some stores only offer downloads on their desktop site, and for those a computer makes it easier.
What happens if a store closes?
Your downloaded files keep working. Download your purchases soon after you buy and keep a backup, because a store's own library can lose titles when rights change.
Are LibriVox books really free to use?
Yes, in the United States, where they are in the public domain. Outside the US, check the book's copyright status where you live.
Why doesn't my ebook sync with the audiobook?
The most common reason is a different edition or translation. Check that the translator, edition and abridgment match. US/UK spelling differences are fine.
Can I share a DRM-free book with friends?
Not unless the licence says so. DRM-free stores still sell personal copies, and some mark the files with your name.
